The doom news cycle

I read I’m a very slow thinker by Derek Sivers this week, and it really resonated with me. I would also describe myself as a slow thinker, and very much struggle in meetings or in discussions, especially when tense, to the point of wondering if I also come across poorly.
This quote particularly stood out to me:People say that your first reaction is the most honest, but I disagree. Your first reaction is usually outdated. Either it’s an answer you came up with long ago and now use instead of thinking, or it’s a knee-jerk emotional response to something in your past.

I finished reading The Managers Path by Camille Fournier this week. I've been going through it for quite a while, trying to intentionally take it slower. It really is fantastic and has been immediately helpful in my work. Definitely a book to read if you're new to engineering management, or indeed if you're an IC with no interest in management! There's something in there for everyone.

I also read this quote this week quoted in The Managers Path, but originally from John Gall's book Systematics which rings very true:
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work. You have to start over with a working simple system.

This tweet thread regarding the new Apple Music Classical app is really wonderful. I'm very excited for this app, and hope that it's a first step to Apple fixing the Music app.
As a classically trained cellist, composer, former Apple employee, and CEO of a design studio that specialized in icon and UI design, I am ~uniquely qualified~ to comment on the Apple Music Classical app.

The news cycle this week has been interesting. It started off with Elon publicly attacking a disabled (ex?) employee Halli, which massively backfired on him. Then it has ended with non-stop talk of both Gary Lineker being silenced by the Conservatives for pointing out they're using language similar to that used in 1930s Germany, along with a side helping of Silicon Valley Bank going bust on Friday, freaking out a large portion of people in tech.

To finish the week on a high, we took swimming for the first time on Sunday evening. It was absolutely wonderful and she thoroughly loved it!
